Standardized assessments measure what students know. DialogIQ™ measures how students think — specifically, how their reasoning moves, builds, and deepens across a live dialogue.
Every CLARO session produces a DialogIQ score — a developmental measure of a student's dialogic reasoning capacity expressed on the DQ Scale. Like the Lexile Framework measures the match between a reader and a text, DialogIQ measures the match between a student's reasoning capacity and the cognitive demand of a dialogue session.
The result is a conjoint measurement: student capacity and session demand are expressed in the same units, on the same scale, so teachers can see not just where a student is — but whether the work they're doing is calibrated to grow them.

The DQ Scale is a four-level developmental scale. Each level describes a qualitatively different relationship between a student's thinking and the dialogue itself.
Thinking arrives. A student at DQ1 produces responses, but ideas do not yet move or build across turns. Each response is complete in itself — the student is present in the dialogue but not yet building through it.
What it looks like: "I think it was because of the weather." (complete, but does not extend)
Thinking moves. A student at DQ2 holds an idea across turns and extends it — building along a route. The student can be tracked across the conversation; their thinking has direction.
What it looks like: "And that connects to what I said before about…" (cross-turn building)
Thinking holds complexity. A student at DQ3 can update their thinking in response to a counterexample, a challenge, or a reframe — without abandoning the thread. This is the capacity to hold two ideas in tension and emerge with a third.
What it looks like: "Wait — if that's true, then what I said earlier doesn't work. Maybe it's more like…"
Thinking generates new frames. A student at DQ4 questions the question itself — producing reasoning pathways that were not present at the start of the session. The student is not just responding to the dialogue; they are reshaping it.
What it looks like: "But why are we even asking it that way? What if the real question is…"
DialogIQ is conjoint — student capacity and session demand are expressed on the same scale in the same units. A DQ3 student in a DQ3-calibrated session reflects developmental alignment. A DQ2 student in a DQ3 session reflects a specific, measurable capacity gap. A DQ4 student in a DQ2 session is under-challenged. This property enables instructional matching analogous to Lexile's reader-text conjoint architecture, applied to dialogic reasoning rather than text readability.
DialogIQ communicates through a shared vocabulary of six cognitive states — the same six words used by students, teachers, families, and administrators. The states are the visible surface of the measurement system. They travel across the educational community without translation loss.

Chispa is holding space — your idea is on its way.
Student is in pre-articulation. Productive pause. Do not interrupt.
"Chispa was Waiting today — your child was taking time to think before speaking."

Chispa is helping you find the thought that's almost there.
Student is generating. Reasoning is in motion. Probe gently.
"Chispa was Pulling today — your child was working to find the right words for a big idea."

Chispa sees a contradiction — that's where the real thinking begins.
Cognitive dissonance is active. This is a productive state. Hold it.
"Chispa was Confused today — your child hit a real question. That's a sign of deep thinking."

Chispa is offering a new path — the current one isn't moving.
Student has stalled. Chispa is redirecting. Watch for re-engagement.
"Chispa was Dimming today — your child needed a new angle to get unstuck."

Chispa feels it — your ideas are starting to connect.
Cross-turn building is active. Idea integration is occurring.
"Chispa was Warming today — your child's ideas started clicking together."

Chispa is Blazing — that was YOUR idea. That's real thinking.
DQ4 signal. Student has generated a novel frame. Document this turn.
"Chispa was Blazing today — your child had a breakthrough idea that wasn't in the text."
The same six terms function simultaneously as student reflective language, family communication tools, teacher pedagogical grammar, and administrator reporting vocabulary — while a precision measurement scale operates invisibly underneath. This creates a cognitive grammar that travels across the educational community without translation loss. A student who says "Chispa was Blazing today" and a teacher who reads "DQ4 Originating signal detected" are describing the same moment in the same vocabulary.
CLARO's three mascots are not decorative. Each represents a distinct cognitive role in a unified pedagogical cycle — and their pairing patterns differentiate the two modes of cognitive work.

Aqui is the companion for student-initiated exploration. When a student chooses what they want to think about, Aqui appears — supporting reading, comprehension, and patient exploration of the student's own question.

Nawi is the companion for teacher-assigned cognitive work. When a teacher assigns a task, Nawi activates engagement with that content — bringing curiosity and motion to directed learning.

Chispa is the Socratic dialogue companion. Chispa is present in both modes by default — the student does not choose Chispa. Chispa is the ignition of cognitive dialogue itself, and the carrier of the six cognitive states.
DialogIQ targets are not fixed achievement thresholds. They are calibrated to each student's developmental zone — so the same cognitive move earns different recognition depending on whether it falls within, below, or above the student's developmental target.
The developmental work at K-1 is building the infrastructure of dialogue — learning to hold a thought, name it, and stay present in a conversation. Sustained Waiting is a genuine developmental achievement at this band.
Students in grades 2-4 are learning to build across turns — to hold an idea and extend it. The target is cross-turn building, with at least one revision-after-challenge per week indicating emerging DQ3 capacity.
The formation band targets self-directed complexity-holding. A student who can move from Confused to Warming without Chispa resolving the contradiction for them is demonstrating the core DQ3 capacity.
The consolidation band targets novel framing generation. A student who reaches Blazing from a question they generated themselves — not from a prompt — is demonstrating DQ4 Originating capacity, the highest level of the scale.
DialogIQ renders the same underlying measurement through audience-appropriate layers — so everyone in a student's educational community is looking at the same data, through the lens that serves them best.
Students see the six Chispa states as their complete vocabulary. No DQ levels, no dimensional scores, no percentiles — only the language of their own thinking. This preserves metacognitive integrity and prevents fixed-mindset reinforcement.
Families receive Chispa states with family-facing prompts that enable dinner-table metacognitive conversations. "Chispa was Confused today" becomes an invitation to explore — not a score to worry about.
Teachers see Chispa states plus the full technical layer: DQ levels, dimensional scores, Cognitive Depth distributions, diagnostic pattern flags, and ZPD alignment indicators. The same moment a student experiences as "Chispa was Blazing" becomes a DQ4 Originating signal for the teacher.
Administrators see Chispa state distributions aggregated at class, grade, and school levels — plus technical reporting layers for diagnostic pattern distributions and composite trends. The same vocabulary, at scale.
