How CLARO works

Making Thinking Visible — a three-part system that measures cognitive depth in real time.

Curiosity ignites the spark. The spark deepens into wisdom. Wisdom fuels new curiosity.

The character was brave because she stayed home.

Student
Challenge

Wait... brave but staying safe? Can someone be brave by not taking a risk?

Chispa

She was brave because everyone left and she had to take care of her family alone.

Name

Oh! So the bravery wasn't about danger, it was about responsibility.

✦ DialogIQ Assessment

Cognitive depth score: Level 4 — Conceptual Reasoning. Student demonstrated ability to reframe a concept and identify non-obvious criteria.

Chispa blazing after student's reasoning breakthrough

What just happened?

The student moved from a surface-level observation to a conceptual insight — redefining "bravery" through their own reasoning. Chispa didn't give the answer. Chispa created the conditions for the student to find it.

That's real thinking. That's CLARO.

The Cognitive State System

Chispa's six states mirror the student's cognitive journey — from waiting to blazing

Chispa Waiting

Waiting

"Take your time. I'm here."

Patient presence while the student gathers thoughts

Chispa Pulling

Pulling

"Hmm, what made you think that?"

Actively drawing reasoning to the surface

Chispa Confused

Confused

"Wait, you said X but also Y?"

Surfacing contradictions to deepen thinking

Chispa Dimming

Dimming

"Let's come back. What were you trying to say?"

Gentle redirection when thinking stalls

Chispa Warming

Warming

"Oh! So you're saying that because... then...?"

Excitement as reasoning begins to crystallize

Chispa Blazing

Blazing

"That was YOUR idea. That's real thinking."

Full celebration of genuine cognitive breakthrough

The Transformation Journey

From confusion to clarity — making thinking visible

Every student begins in the dark. CLARO's dialogue guides them through four alchemical phases until original thought emerges.

Step 01The Dark Matter
Chispa waiting patiently

Nigredo

The raw, unprocessed state. Students begin with surface-level responses, disconnected facts, or silence.

“I don’t know… the character was just sad.”

— Student

Chispa: “Take your time. I’m here.”

Step 02The Whitening
Chispa curious and pulling reasoning

Albedo

Purification through questioning. Chispa strips away assumptions, revealing the structure beneath the answer.

“Wait — maybe she wasn’t sad, she was… scared?”

— Student

Chispa: “What made you think that?”

Step 03The Yellowing
Chispa warming up with excitement

Citrinitas

Illumination begins. Students connect ideas, make inferences, and start building arguments from evidence.

“She was scared AND brave — they can be the same thing!”

— Student

Chispa: “Oh! So you’re saying that because…”

Step 04The Reddening
Chispa blazing with joy

Rubedo

The gold. Genuine reasoning emerges — original thinking, self-questioning, the ability to hold complexity.

“Bravery isn’t about danger. It’s about what you choose to protect.”

— Student

Chispa: “That was YOUR idea. That’s real thinking.”

Every student can reach the gold. CLARO shows you exactly where they are in the journey.

The Reward System, Methodology & Pedagogy

CLARO's design is grounded in a single principle: the student's mind must do the work. Every element — from the Socratic dialogue engine to the reward architecture — is engineered to return cognitive load to the learner, not absorb it.

🔍

Socratic Dialogue Engine

CLARO never supplies answers. Using the four-move taxonomy — Probe, Mirror, Challenge, Name — it asks questions that require students to articulate, defend, and refine their own reasoning. Authorship stays with the student; the platform generates no submittable content.

Degen (2025); Kosmyna et al. (2025) MIT

🧠

Fading Scaffolding Design

Scaffolding addiction is a documented risk of AI-assisted learning. CLARO counters this through structured fading: the questioning role is gradually transferred to the student over time. The explicit goal is for the learner to internalize the Socratic method and need the tool less.

Lee et al. (2025); Kosmyna et al. (2025)

⚖️

Equity by Design

Bloom's 2 Sigma research established one-to-one tutoring as the most powerful educational intervention — and historically the least equitably distributed. Scalable Socratic dialogue democratizes exactly that, giving every student access to the kind of thinking partnership previously available only to the privileged few.

Patent Pending · Reward Architecture

Rewards That Reinforce Thinking, Not Answers

Most gamified learning systems reward completion or correct answers — which trains students to seek the answer, not to think. CLARO's patent-pending reward architecture is built on a fundamentally different premise: students earn recognition for the quality and depth of their reasoning process, not for arriving at a predetermined answer.

  • Cognitive state progression (Waiting → Pulling → Warming → Blazing) is tracked per session
  • Badges are earned for demonstrated thinking behaviors, not correct answers
  • Chispa & Friends characters unlock as students reach new cognitive milestones
  • Fading scaffolding: the reward system itself gradually shifts the questioning role to the student
  • Teacher dashboard surfaces thinking depth data — not just completion rates

DialogIQ™ Is the Answer to AI Cognitive Offloading

Gerlich (2025, Societies 15(1):6) found a significant negative correlation between AI use and critical thinking scores across 666 participants. The MIT EEG study (Kosmyna et al., 2025) found that ChatGPT users showed the weakest brain connectivity — a pattern the authors termed “cognitive debt.” These findings apply to answer-generating AI. DialogIQ™ inverts the dynamic entirely: it never supplies answers. Instead, it returns cognitive load to the learner through structured questioning — making thinking harder, not easier, in exactly the right way.

Dialogue-first tutoring using the same question-withholding design as DialogIQ™ produced large learning gains in independent studies (partial η² = .20 and .32 respectively) — effect sizes rarely seen in educational intervention research.

The Pedagogy Behind DialogIQ™

CLARO's four-move dialogue taxonomy — Probe, Mirror, Challenge, Name — is grounded in classical dialogue pedagogy and adapted for K–12 learners. Each move serves a specific epistemic function: Probe surfaces assumptions, Mirror reflects the student's own language back to them, Challenge introduces productive cognitive dissonance, and Name helps the student articulate the insight they have reached.

The system tracks cognitive state across six levels — from Waiting through Pulling, Warming, and Blazing — giving teachers a real-time window into the depth of each student's thinking, not just task completion. Authorship always stays with the student; DialogIQ™ generates no submittable content.
