CLARO's Research Position
The research literature on AI and learning is not monolithic. It contains strong evidence for harm (cognitive offloading, homogenization, dependency) and strong evidence for benefit (Socratic tutoring, fading scaffolding, one-to-one dialogue). These findings are not in conflict β they describe different tools operating on different principles.
Answer-generating AI does the thinking for the student. Socratic AI requires the student to do the thinking. CLARO is built on the second principle β and every design decision flows from that distinction.
We take every objection seriously. Some are valid concerns about AI in general. Some are category errors. All deserve a research-grounded response.
"Using this is cheating / plagiarism."
Cheating is a function of task design, not tool category. CLARO generates no submittable content.
"Children should have human friends, not AI 'friends'."
This is an objection to companion AI β a category error. CLARO is a learning tool, not a companion.
"AI erodes critical thinking and causes cognitive offloading."
TRUE for answer-generating AI. FALSE for Socratic AI β which inverts the dynamic entirely.
"Students will become dependent on AI scaffolding."
A real risk β but CLARO's fading scaffolding design explicitly transfers the questioning role to the student over time.
